How to update your PS3 using a USB device

One of the things that I hate about the Firmware updates of the PlayStation 3 is the wait time to just download the file, so after the first two upgrades I learned to download the file directly from Internet to my PC and then install it using a USB device. The only downside is that it may take a few hour for them to update the download pages, but that’s ok for me.

First you should download the Update from one of the following sites. Note that until now all the updates have been the same for every PS3 around the world.
Download from Japan
Download from Europe
Download from United States

The next step is to create a folder in your USB device named PS3 and inside create another one named UPDATE. Now place the PS3UPDAT.PUP update file that you just downloaded in the folder UPDATE so it looks like this in your USB device: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Now all you have to do is connect your USB device to your PS3, go to Settings, select System Update and “Update via Storage Media”. Now the the PS3 will automatically copy the update to the Hard Drive and update the system from there.

do you just put the USB device in when the ps3 is on or off and then turn it on ?

  5. Ch3rokee says:

Like any USB device, you can plug it anytime you want. Normally, I plug it after turning on the PS3 and unplug it once it’s finished updating.

i did what u said and wen it got to 100% copy it sed it was corrupted wtf???

  9. Ch3rokee says:

Did you “safely remove” your USB memory after copying the update (on the PC)? If not, that can cause the data to corrupt.

And of course, there could have been a problem with the download, so you would have to download it again.
