I have a Sony HD Ready TV, and as you may know, all HD Ready LCDs have a resolution of 1360×768 and mine has 1:1 Pixel Mapping for certain resolutions, so I wanted to configure it to 1360×768 to get the best image quality at the maximum size.
First I tried to connect it through VGA, but the maximum size it’s 1280×768. Then I connected it using a DVI to HDMI cable and what was my surprise when I found that it was only working at 1080i, no matter the selected resolution .
I couldn’t stand 1080i because the difference in Image Quality between 1080i and the native resolution (1360×768) is abysmal, there’s also overscan (like in 720p) and when using it at 1360×768 it works at full RGB range like a PC monitor, so I spent several minutes changing configurations in the nVIDIA Control Panel until I found all the options needed to be changed to make it work flawlessly at 1360×768 using the HDMI input.
Here are all the steps needed to be made to enjoy the full quality of your HD Ready TV using the nVIDIA Control Panel:
1. Open the nVIDIA Control Panel
You can always find it in your Computer’s Control Panel
2. Select “Advanced” in the View Tab

Make sure you are in the Advanced Mode.
3. Select “Change flat panel scaling”
This option and the next two are inside “Display” in the “Select a Task…” Column.
Here you have to select your HDTV and then select the option “Use my display’s built-in scaling”.
4. Manage custom resolutions
Here you need select your HDTV and then UNCHECK “Treat as HDTV”
5. Set up multiple displays
Here you just need to make sure that they are “Configured independently from each other (Dualview)” if you have your monitor and your HDTV connected at the same time.
6. Modify full-screen video options
This option it’s inside “Video & Television”
Here you have to select “Only show it in my viewing application” to be able to use your video player software like PowerDVD in any monitor indistinctly and view it in full screen in the same monitor the player’s window it’s in.
7. Select your screen resolution
Select 1360×768 as your screen resolution in the nVIDIA Control Panel or in Display Properties and you’re done.
Now you can enjoy the full image quality of your HD Ready TV.
I’m so glad i found this post. I’m about to purchase a 32 in. Sony Bravia, and my graphics card just crapped out. So before I bought a new one I thought I would search around to see what I needed for the TV and I came upon this post. I was wondering if you could let me know which nVidia card you have and whether or not you like it. I’m assuming all nVidia cards will let me adjust the settings but I’ve used ATI in the past and wanted to know what card you had.
Thanks
Hello nelsoma, I’m glad you found it helpful.
I have a nvidia 7800GT but it doesn’t matter because as you assumed all nvidia cards will let you adjust all this settings when you have installed the latest drivers that can be found at http://www.nvidia.com
Of curse if you are going to buy a new card now I recommend you to buy one of the 8000 series.
If you need something more specific feel free to ask.
Thanks, I went ahead and got an MSI card with the 8600GT chipset so as soon as the TV arrives next week I’ll be ready. Thanks for your help.
Nice
